Powering Economic Expansion in the Region

Avalon Advanced Materials Inc. is developing the Nechalacho Rare Earth Element (REE) Project at Thor Lake in the Northwest Territories, located 100 kilometres southeast of Yellowknife. This project will establish five integrated infrastructure systems essential to support a 20-year mine life producing 730,000 tonnes per year of ore, with cascading economic and social benefits across the Northwest Territories, Northern Alberta, and beyond.

  • A new all-season road will eliminate seasonal transportation constraints that have historically limited economic activity in the region The road will incorporate standards specified by territorial regulations and supports future use by Indigenous communities, government agencies, and emerging economic development activities in the region. Regional carriers and logistics companies will benefit from this transportation corridor, creating competitive bidding opportunities and employment across multiple operators.
    ‍
  • A new marine dock facility on Great Slave Lake will create economic opportunities for regional marine operators and barge service providers during open water seasons, establishing a viable shipping corridor and improving service capability and geographic reach.
  • New telecommunications infrastructure, initially serving mine operations, will establish digital connectivity in a remote region that has historically lacked reliable internet and communication.
    ‍
  • New water management systems will establish precedent infrastructure for future regional development as well as demonstrate feasible technology for remote location water supply.
    ‍
  • A grid connection to Taltson Hydroelectric will strengthen territorial energy security and directly enables the Government of the Northwest Territories' $2 billion-plus Taltson Hydro Expansion initiative. By committing to a substantial long-term power demand, Nechalacho materially improves the economic case for this territorial infrastructure priority, benefiting multiple potential users including future mining operations, diamond producers, and communities currently dependent on diesel generation.
